Survey on quality and rigour of ITD methods, of the Quality and Rigour Project, WG Toolkits & Methods, ITD Alliance

This is a survey on criteria, indicators, and dimensions for assessing the appropriateness, robustness, scientific rigour, and effectiveness of ITD tools and methods.

Goal:

This survey aims to initiate a reflection on criteria that have been mentioned as potentially relevant for assessing the quality and rigour of inter- and transdisciplinary (ITD) methods during the Quality and Rigour Discussion Sessions of the Quality & Rigour Project of the Working Group Toolkits & Methods of the ITD Alliance. Consequently, the criteria presented here are heterogeneous and not yet clearly defined; they are presented as they emerged in the discussions. The aim is to understand whether these criteria resonate within the ITD community and whether they are being applied or not in practice.

Background:

The Toolkits & Methods group focuses on toolkits & methods to support interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, or cross-disciplinary processes in research, practice, or education. Since 2021 we have been holding the Rigour Discussion Sessions, in which different ITD researchers and practitioners have been discussing on: what makes an ITD method a good ITD method?

ITD methods refer to specific combinations of steps to deal with complex problems in a systematic and traceable way, engaging the collaboration between experts and stakeholders from science and practice with a view to collect and integrate their perspectives and knowledge. To document the outcomes of these discussions and make them accessible to the community, work has begun to compile them in a Living Document. The criteria, indicators, and dimensions included in the Living Document reflect the current state of the discussions. They have not been further processed, systematized, or refined.

This survey aims to provide an initial reflection on this current state of the discussion. The results will also be used to further develop and refine the collected criteria and published in a journal relevant to the meta-research on ITD.
